Since both the Wonderful Man(W.M) I married and I love the sea, boats, beaches in the sun, and travel, we decided to sail aboard the Star Clipper sailing vessel in the Caribbean, for our honeymoon. My only demand was that it be luxurious… no roughing it for me for this special trip, and not too many people or planned activities every minute. We flew to St.Maarten, to board the Star Clipper, a beautiful sailing ship in the tradition of the very rich and famous.

Our cabin was quite comfortable, with a marble shower, TV, vanity, queen size bed, and a porthole overlooking the rest of the harbor. Fortunately WM, wise in the way of boats, had cautioned not to pack huge steamer suitcases. “We don’t need all that formal stiff shirt stuff, just nice casual for evening dining, and only shorts, swim wear for the rest of the time.” As a result, our luggage slid comfortably under our bed, with the remainder of our clothes hung or put in one of the many drawers. I laughed inwardly to think of my concerns for some luxury, as we listened to Csaba play cocktail melodies (and most anything else you wanted to hear) before dinner.

At our dinner table, we met two other couples and two people traveling alone. Some were on such a cruise for the first time and some were returning for a third time, although previously they had traveled to the Mediterranean or the Far East aboard a Star Clipper ship. Our waiters were expertly trained and smoothly, unobtrusively served our dinner. The wine steward advised us on wine and served the bottle of our choice. That first night, I tried all six courses, including a cheese course before dessert(s). W.M. and I ordered different things (steak for him, lamb for me) and traded bites just to taste. Whew! Thereafter, I was more restrained and often skipped a course or ate just a taste. Eating, for those who chose, could become a major activity on this cruise. Not only is there an early bird breakfast, but a breakfast buffet and a lunch buffet. There was an afternoon snack during cocktail hour, followed by dinner, then a midnight snack. A “snack” aboard Star Clipper always entails a choice among four to six or more dishes.

After dinner, we joined many of the passengers topside, to participate in the setting of the sails for St Barth. What could be more romantic than a full moon shining a silver highway to – forever? Many drifted to the Sail Away Celebration, with music and dancing, but we had been traveling since morning and elected to go below to our cabin, to be rocked in this cradle of the deep.

By morning we were moored close off the quaint city of Gustavia, St. Barth, with an array of activities available to us, like water sports, SCUBA dive instructions, and a snorkel safari with a zodiac. There were walking tours around the harbor and shopping strolls around the little city. W.M. elected for the walking tour, during which he got some beautiful photos looking down on the town and harbor, with our proud clipper ship moored. I elected to stroll the chic shops and observe the people and life on the island. Bikes and motorbikes outnumber cars. Everyone speaks English, and money is in dollars or Euros. Tenders from our ship ran to shore and back about every 20 minutes, so transportation was no problem.

Life in this tropical dream was tranquil, but no two days were alike. Each night we sailed to arrive at another island: St Barth, Nevis, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Ile de Saintes, Antigua, and back to St. Maarten. Of course, each island was different, some with mountains of old volcanoes, some low and flat. Some featured waterfalls, bird watching, rainforest hikes, botanical and nature hikes, and some featured horseback riding, beach swimming and snorkeling, all with a small town. In almost every stop, there was a beautiful curved beach, and our sports staff from the ship was there to assist and safeguard everyone and supply our Laser-type small boats, snorkeling gear and banana boat rides. On Antigua, the ship provided a barbeque lunch on the beach, complete with a real Caribbean steel band.

Our last day we disembarked early, but our flight was not scheduled to leave until that afternoon. So, we elected for the Star Clipper’s package offering transfer from the ship to Divi Little Bay Resort, to spend one more day in the sun until our airport transportation would arrive.

Sitting on deck high above the sapphire-blue ocean, enjoying the morning sun and sipping fresh juice and steaming coffee, we watched pelicans soar above in lazy circles as our enormous ship pulled into a colorfully painted port at an island filled with possibilities to explore. Without a doubt, our cruise of the southern Caribbean aboard Celebrity’s Constellation, was one of the most peaceful, fulfilling, and adventurous experiences we’ve ever shared.

It began one warm spring evening as our plane landed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We grabbed our luggage, hailed a taxi, and rushed across the city to board the 91,000-ton luxurious floating city Celebrity Cruises calls their flagship. The magnificent vessel hosts several restaurants and nightclubs, a coffee bar, a full Broadway-style theater, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, several hot tubs, a library, a conservatory, a game room, a walking track, table tennis, an Internet club, a movie theater, meeting rooms, gym equipment, a casino, a variety of shops, and more, all masterfully decorated to convey a sense of luxury. At all hours of the day and night, the friendly and highly international staff hosted endless activities and entertainment — everything from dancing on deck as the rum flowed freely, to karaoke in one of the lounges, to cooking demonstrations or bingo tournaments, to live music with a string quartet or a harpist or an outrageously funny acapella group.

Our stateroom, like so many aboard the Constellation, opened onto a small balcony overlooking the ocean as we cut through the waves at up to 24 knots. The room was efficient and cozy with a writing desk, love seat, abundant closet space, shower and water closet, and perhaps the most comfortable bed we’ve ever enjoyed on vacation. At night we would open the door to the veranda, feel the salty breeze and listen to the waves below, as the ship gently rocked us to sleep.

Of course, food is a centerpiece on any cruise, and Celebrity’s culinary options excelled our expectations. The two-story main dining room offered scrumptious breakfasts each day and four-course dinners in the evening, served by waiters who specialized in anticipating the needs of their guests. But there were plenty of other choices available, from the buffet of the Seaside Grill with its windows looking out on the spectacular views, to endless pizza and hamburgers served poolside, to healthier entrees available by the spa, to a sushi bar, and even an ice cream stand. And if we’d rather dine privately on our veranda, room service was always a phone call away ‘round the clock.

The Constellation also offers a spectacular specialty restaurant, Ocean Liners. Recreating the style and tradition of the 1927 luxury liner, Ile de France, this restaurant offers dozens of entrée specialties paired perfectly with an extensive wine list, all offered with grace and flare under the supervision of award-winning Master Chef Michel Roux. We enjoyed Ocean Liners on one of the formal nights, decked out in a tuxedo and glamorous gown, which gave the experience an extra touch of romance. And, as usual, the staff offered us another example of their superior hospitality and service.

In partnership with Bon Appetit magazine, Celebrity Cruises hosted a “Savor the Caribbean” theme during our cruise, offering opportunities to discover the region’s unique style of cooking and meet some of the chefs that give the islands their culinary charisma. On our first morning aboard the Constellation, we docked at the Dominican Republic and took advantage of one of these culinary excursions. We boarded a bus and enjoyed a quick tour of Casa de Campo, including an opportunity to stroll through Altos de Chavon, a charming recreation of an old Spanish town. Though we caught a glimpse of one of the best golf courses in the Caribbean, “The Teeth of the Dog,” we rushed on to one of the resort’s restaurants for a culinary demonstration by Executive Chef Philippe Mongereau and an outstanding seafood meal in the open-walled pavilion overlooking the bay at sunset.

Our second day onboard was spent entirely at sea, giving us the opportunity to explore the various activities available on the ship. We spent the afternoon curled up on cushioned lounge chairs on deck by the pool, reading, talking, holding hands, getting a touch of sunburn (the Caribbean sun is very intense), and just watching the clouds and waves drift by as a band played a mix of reggae and soft rock on deck. After dinner, we enjoyed the singing and dancing of the ship’s Broadway revue, followed by a quiet stroll on deck under a full moon and bright stars

The next morning, the ship pulled into port at Bridgetown, Barbados. We took a quick shuttle bus ride over to Broad Street, the main shopping area of town. Feeling a bit like a Caribbean-esque London, the area offered a wide assortment of duty-free shopping. Tourists bustled about purchasing gems and jewelry, rum, local arts and crafts, and various souvenirs. In the afternoon, as some of our shipmates headed for local beaches or a tour of the Mount Gay Rum Factory, we enjoyed an excursion that took us ocean kayaking and snorkeling with enormous sea turtles. The water was warm and clear, and the turtles swam among us and let us touch their beautiful shells. By evening we were back on board the Constellation, enjoying the pampering and entertainment once again.

At sunrise the next day, our ship dropped anchor offshore of Grenada, a lush and mountainous island known for its spices, wildlife preserves, and the world famous Grand Anse Beach — two miles of pristine white sand, diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, and more. We hired a cab driver to give us a tour of the island, and he offered a colorful perspective of the local sights and sounds, including stops at a tropical waterfall and one of the many spice markets. We were treated to a hands-on demonstration of how mace, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cocoa are harvested, and we couldn’t resist purchasing batches of fresh spices to bring home as gifts.

Our next stop was in Antigua, and we spent the morning strolling through the colorful shops right outside the harbor. Then we joined in another of Bon Appetit’s culinary excursions which took us on a long car ride across the island to the charming Harmony Hall Inn. As we relaxed in a garden setting overlooking the jade green waters, Executive Chef Renato Somella shared his passion for Italian cuisine and offered an entertaining and educational cooking lesson. Then, as he and his staff prepared an outstanding lunch for us, we took a quick boat ride over to the beach of uninhabited Green Island for a little time of swimming and soaking up the sun.

Our final port of call was Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, one of the most beautiful and popular cruise stops. We enjoyed a quick breakfast on board before disembarking for our first excursion of the day: an adventurous underwater tour on our very own “BOBs” (Breathing Observation Bubbles). Similar to an underwater motor scooter, the BOBs included an air tank supplying a glass dome over our heads, so it felt a bit like being in a reverse aquarium. Divers helped us adjust to the pressure as we descended then led us on a guided tour of the reef, pausing long enough to photograph us hand-in-hand on our BOBs. When we weren’t riding our BOBs, we enjoyed the best snorkeling of our island tours and discovered a wide variety of colorful fish in the sheltered cove.

In the afternoon, we headed for a second adventure. This time we went parasailing high above the waves for a truly breathtaking flight. Our host was eager to give us an exciting experience. We sat on the back of the boat, strapped ourselves together and to the parachute, and in seconds we were nearly four hundred feet in the sky. The island lay far below us, surrounded by bright blue waters. In the distance, we saw the enormous dark clouds of a storm rolling across the ocean. The driver slowed the boat and allowed us to drift down until our feet skipped across the top of the waves, then gunned the engine and sent us flying back up in a dizzying rush. It was an unforgettable adrenaline rush.

Our final night aboard the Constellation was spent packing, saying goodbye to friends we met during the trip, and enjoying one last leisurely dinner together. We walked the decks once more, taking in the sights and sounds, enjoying the lively music throughout the ship, and talking about the incredible experience we had shared.

Disembarking in Puerto Rico the next morning was handled masterfully, as Celebrity demonstrated their expertise at helping two thousand passengers leave the ship, pass through U.S. Customs, and be reunited with their luggage. We had several hours before our plane would depart, so we checked our bags at the airport and hired a taxi to take us over to Old San Juan. We found the narrow cobblestone streets and brightly colored buildings absolutely charming. Old Spanish forts, a historic cathedral, shady parks, and arts & crafts markets offered a wonderful touring experience before we had to head back to the airport and the reality of our lives back home.

Throughout our trip, Celebrity proved why they are the industry’s highest-rated premium cruise line. They offer adventures not only to the Caribbean, but to Alaska, Hawaii, the Mexican Riviera, South America, Europe, and more. We also discovered why cruising is such a popular vacation choice; the romance, adventure, and gracious hospitality just can’t be beat. This may have been our first cruise, but it certainly won’t be our last!

My husband and I checked into the International House in New Orleans on a warm, damp Friday afternoon. After our car was whisked away to be valet parked, we were ushered into the main lobby of the hotel where opulent chandeliers hovered above artfully arranged ottomans. Colors of rich chocolate browns and deep reds created an almost hushed atmosphere, punctuated by dramatic lamps and candles. We were checked-in and escorted to our room: one of two brand new spacious penthouse suites.

Stepping out onto our private terrace offered breathtaking panoramic views of the Mississippi River and the city of New Orleans. Besides the two flat-screen televisions, the rich curtains leading into the bedroom area, included a comfortable living room area and the luscious bed itself. But the best part of the room was the bathroom. A chandelier hung over the 7’ bathtub and the open shower featured a “watering cans” shower head that gently rained water down from above.

Our first morning, we walked just a couple blocks to Café du Monde for their famous café au lait and beignets. When we returned to our room, we indulged in a Southern Flower Bath, prepared by the hotel. A specialty of International House, the flower bath is romantic and sensual, perfect for couples wanting to share a unique experience. A complete renovation of the hotel was completed in the spring of 2007. The renovation was overseen by owner, Sean Cummings and Los Angeles-based designer LM Pagano, who has designed for Hollywood celebrities like Nicolas Cage and Johnny Depp.

Our last night in New Orleans, we walked down the block to the International House’s sister hotel, Loft 523. Their bar is a chic, exclusive hangout place only open to guests staying at either of the two hotels. It was packed on that Saturday night. After we had finished our drinks, we walked hand-in-hand back to our hotel, as the city settled into the cool evening and the sounds of New Orleans drifted up to the moon above the skyline.

Begin your ‘inward journey’ by visiting The Spa at the Marriott Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL. It is one of the most calming and peaceful places I have visited. It was hard to get me to leave!

“Peace to All Who Enter” is the message to everyone upon entering the spa. Once you enter the Spa you enter an environment of pure serenity. The “Hall of Whispers” main corridor is dimly lit, which leads to all the treatment rooms. The rooms are individually identified by botanical names such as, Bamboo, Moonstone, Ginger and Jasmine representing the dry treatment rooms and marine names like Neptune’s Hideaway and Gulf Waters for the wet treatment rooms. Director, Susie Milus Marquez said the services are truly a marriage between the plant and sea kingdom – all going back to nature. So as not to alter the mood, at the end of the hallway are three bamboo poles – they represent the Mind, Body and Spirit triad. Attention is paid to detail after detail.

After entering the women’s changing area I slipped into one of the provided brushed micro-fiber robes lined with ultra soft yet absorbent terry cloth. This is the real deal – this robe is the most comfortable robe I have ever worn! You guessed right – you can purchase them for a meager $100.00 each. To keep in a state of tranquility – there are inspirations printed on the cards with the locker keys. All are different.

I arrived early so I could enjoy the Quiet Room; a dimly lit room filled with mosaic tiles, burning candles, comfy pillowed teak furniture, refreshments, and snacks. There is also a Jacuzzi that can hold up to 21 people. Don’t worry you won’t see that many people – maybe two at a time. Arriving a good 30-60 minutes prior to a treatment is well advised in order to unwind and completely relax.

It was time for my treatment and opted for the pregnancy massage, being 6 months pregnant, and it was wonderful. My therapist attended to all my aches and pains with firm yet gentle motions. It was clear that my comfort was the only thing that mattered to my therapist. One of my friends that had visited with me opted for the Vichy Shower. This Vichy shower treatment is unlike most – the treatment takes place in a bed, designed in Australia, with a cocoon like cover. This cover pulls down over your body, not your neck or head, and showers you all over – Southern women don’t like to be too over-exposed – if you know what I mean. If you are a Vichy shower fan but don’t like revealing yourself to strangers this bed will be the answer to your prayers. Another one of my guests enjoyed a warm stone massage. This 80-minute massage is used with warmed polished stones. The riverbed stones are said to have ancient healing properties that will melt away even the worst tension and stress. My friend said thumbs up! If you haven’t tried it – just like the pamphlet says its “A Must Try!”

This spa concentrates on wellness and prevention. They only use natural products, plant and marine based ingredients. They even acknowledge that men and women are different and have products for each in all the treatment rooms.

When you visit Southern Alabama or any of the surrounding areas you’ll want to make sure you put the Marriott Grand Hotel and The Spa at the Grand on your agenda.

To make a reservation or for more information about the spa please call (251) 990-6385.

Somewhere between the rocky coasts of Maine and the sandy beaches of Florida exists the Low Country: a most harmonious confluence of land, water, nature and people. More specifically, Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head, an island off the coast near Charleston, S.C., is a testament to the preservation of the Low Country and its wealth of natural resources and beauty.

A creature of habit myself, I typically migrate to both extreme geographical coastlines each year, with little thought of what lies in between. For some unknown explanation, Hilton Head conjured up a commercialized, over-developed island cramming with ubiquitous, chain restaurants and suffocating, skyscraping condominiums. So, it was with some preconceived misguided notions I set off to discover the beauty of the Low Country and Sea Pines Resort. Fortunately, I couldn’t have been more wrong…

Sea Pines Resort is triumphantly celebrating its 50th anniversary in business. Generations of families have migrated here year after year to reconnect. Lovers come to rejuvenate and relax and honeymooners, as well as nuptial seekers. come for the pristine and romantic surroundings, professional event planning and diversity of recreation.

Sea Pines Resort comprises over 5,200 acres and offers diverse accommodations and locations on the island. Whatever your profile – couple, honeymooners, family, golfer, sailor, tennis player; Sea Pine’s has the right accommodations for you and their staff is highly motivated to placing you accordingly.

Charles Fraser was to Sea Pines Resort as Walt Disney was to Disneyworld. A masterful planner with great vision he developed the island with genius deliberation and his vision continues today with a conscientious consideration for an environmental-friendly and aesthetically pleasing lifestyle. Homes and buildings all blend into the landscaping further enhancing the beauty of the island. Golf courses are Audubon approved; meaning you tee off on non-toxic greens and walk the course admiring myriad birdhouses purposefully placed to invite the astonishing array of birds the Island attracts.

As nature is always prevalent on the island, you’ll most likely also witness a few alligators sunning themselves along the course. Golf is king on the island, but gators are the gatekeepers. Alligators are more than an after thought in this area and life and people have the utmost respect for nature and live accordingly. Gators are incredibly fascinating, versatile and downright mesmerizing and a visit to the Sea Pine’s Preserve; another brilliant conservation consideration of 605 acres by Charles Fraser, is a definite time worthy event. For those searching for a kinder and gentler creature, you can take a Loggerhead Turtle Search, or an all time favorite: crabbing at the Preserve, as well.

I have always had a bittersweet relationship with a vacation on the coastline. I typically feel compelled to be at the beach or wherever I can touch, see and hear the ocean. If I’m not there, I feel anxious and cheated, after all, I live in Memphis and the Mississippi just doesn’t quench or satisfy my need for hydrotherapy.

That is where the magic lies of Sea Pines Resort. There is a wealth of beauty, amenities and activities that exist beyond the border of the coast. From land sports of golf, tennis and biking to dolphin and gator gazing, to parasailing and boating, I spent an inspiring and fun-filled weekend enjoying the beach, water, land and the low country’s indigenous creatures. The magic also lies within the Harbour Inn at Sea Pines. Step into the foyer of the resort and you’ll appreciate the tradition of this 50-year-old establishment that was designed after the finer Inn’s of Europe. The international staff includes men in kilts who greet and welcome you, and the English-inspired butler service invites you to test their expert skills. You can then move on to the beautifully decorated In that exudes a casual elegance with exquisite polished pine floors, charming French and English antiques, ornate carpets and amazing views of the golf course where the famous Heritage Professional Golf Tournament is dramatically played out every year.

The guest rooms are also freshly and beautifully decorated in a charming, not overdone, blend of rustic nautical theme with captivating views of the golf course and resort area. Beds are a luxurious place to lay your head at the end of a busy day. Bathrooms are surprisingly on the large side with a separate shower and soaking bath area. I could have unpacked my belongings and spent the weekend between the lobby and my room but the call of nature was pulsating through my veins and I was too curious and eager to discover all there was to this area that has been notoriously written and sung about so much.

Discovering the Island is both relaxing and invigorating. You can enjoy biking for miles on designated paths to numerous activities including, golf, tennis, shopping, dining or even the spa, all under a canopy of old oak trees bearing animated twisted and spiraling limbs.

In search of pure romance one evening, we chartered the Mystique for an evening cocktail-dinner cruise around the Calibougue Sound. Fine food and wine served by charming international staff provides a truly memorable experience. The Mystique crew comes with loads of experience and knows just how to highlight the scenery of Hilton Head. You will see inspirational views of the marshy coastline and the infamous and most photographed, candy cane–striped lighthouse while listening to equally inspirational music from the talented musicians showcased almost nightly from the Harbour center square. (Be sure to go back to the light-house tomorrow and visit this Low Country icon and learn all about its history). I did wander away from the water long enough to take a golf and tennis lesson. The level of professional instruction was such that not only was it an amazing experience but it turned me totally anti- “what kind of waste of time is that to chase a little white ball” to feeling a total fulfillment out of a 250 yard shot. The instructor told me it looked like I’d been playing all my life and that compliment could not have been more appreciated had he told me I looked 20 years younger than my age. So, now I get it… and now I can not wait to take more lessons and realize my golf-potential.

Sea Pines is also famous for their tennis. The instructor of the Stan Smith clinic was so engaging and encouraging that I endured 90 plus degrees running around on the court and loved every pounding step of it! The level of expertise is such that if you have any athletic or natural skill, they are going to bring it out and you are going to shine like no other time.

For more water-based activities there’s H2O, which caters to all your hydro needs. We took a dolphin cruise and could not have been more delighted by this mammal and also the tour leader. Once again, the respect for nature and the animals was so impressive and made the excursion all the more informative and enjoyable. H20 is also your source for windsurfing, kayaking and any other sort of water based activity.

Of course, all this activity builds up an appetite and the Island is bountiful with noshing holes. The island serves up plenty of fresh water catches and other tantalizing dishes. The Surfside Grill, right on the coast, has a casual island feel with island inspired dishes, tropical drinks, music and awesome views of the coast. Do not miss the infamous Salty Dog Café, which offers satisfying pub food for lunch in a quirky fun atmosphere located in the South BeachMarina Village. Grab a t-shirt and shop for other treasures at the myriad boutiques along the waterfront. The Old Fort Pub provides an elegant supper-club feel with a more sophisticated menu. Order a pre-dinner cocktail and head to the spiral stairs that take you to a tree top area where you’ll catch your breath from the climb and from the breathtaking sunset island views. Gather your thoughts and your loved one, clink your glasses and toast to each other and the memories you’ll have of Sea Pines and all of its wonder.

Look no further for the ultimate romantic getaway in true paradise, say “Ia ora na” (hello) to the islands of French Polynesia. Comprised of 118 different islands and spanning over two million square miles of the South Pacific Ocean, French Polynesia is separated into five archipelagos (chain or cluster of islands). The most visited of these island chains are the Society Islands which are geographically divided into two groups; the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands. From the magnificent lagoons to the lush volcanic peaks, the Society Islands are often referred to as some of the most romantic and beautiful places on earth.

Tahiti is the largest of the Society Islands and also serves as the gateway to French Polynesia. Papeete, the capital of Tahiti, is a modern day busy city harboring many businesses and shops. Here you will find large hotels, restaurants, night clubs and shopping centers galore. A must-see while in Papeete is the La Marche (town center marketplace) that features local handcrafts, fresh fish, tropical fruits and vegetables all sold by local vendors. There is much more to Tahiti than the city of Papeete. If you are looking for lush valleys, scenic volcanic mountain tops and historical places they can all be found on this island. Some points of interest you may want to consider are the Botanical Museum, the Paul Gaugin Museum, Tomb of King Pomare V and the Marea Arahurahu. Helicopter rides, circle island tours and walking tours are some of the best ways to experience the diverse scenery of Tahiti.

South Africa repeatedly shows up on travel sites as one of the top 10 destinations to visit. It was also on mine. Presumably Safari was the reason, because, it too was mine.

On a recent trip to South Africa, however, I got a taste of what the country has to offer beyond the animal kingdom. I discovered that burgeoning cities like Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban are bursting with culture and diversity. Eco-pristine luxurious resorts are lining the interior regions and coastline, and the growing appreciation of South African wines are luring those who hear more than just the call of the wild.

Time commitment and expensive airfare added to a vast country that offers a myriad of activities, however, can be overwhelming and stop your dream vacation in its tracks. A good bet is to let an experienced travel agent or tour operator, who specializes in South Africa travel, handle the details and logistics of navigating the country and your itinerary to ensure you get the most out of your “trip of a lifetime.”

Magi Guinane, owner of Imagine Expeditions, has been leading travelers through the southern tip of Africa for over 10 years. Through phone calls, e-mails and questionnaires she is able to discern between your needs and wishes. Her knowledge and passion of South Africa, combined with acute attention to detail, offers “concierge level” of services. Much like your own personal assistant and tour guide, Magi is able to provide a seamless level of comfort, ease, and continuity to your experience.
